Shellshocked was created by two Brisbane up and coming comedians and veterans – Kara Robinson and Michael Albrecht.
Shellshocked is the brain-child of Brisbane based comedian Kara Robinson. Kara was performing at an open-mic night in Cairns, with a military related joke within her set. After the set, a man from the audience approached her and told her he fought in the Vietnam War. He then told her an extremely harrowing and graphic story about his experiences in the horror of that war. His awaiting family advised that he had never spoken of the war since it had occurred. It was then that Kara realised the power of comedy – how words can help heal, connect, and share. Kara imagined a space to support Veterans within the art form of comedy, and hence, Shellshocked was born. Teaming up with Michael Albrecht, Afghanistan Veteran, the two scrambled and recruited, marketed, and drew up a plan for a comedy show. Support did not come easy – they pair were labelled as quite insane for making an attempt at creating a comedy about war and post-traumatic stress disorder. But by ensuring that victims and families were given appropriate acknowledgement, Shellshocked has since paved the way of demonstrating how humour, timed correctly, can provide light in the darkest of places.
In 2023, Jarryd Goundrey, Chris Franklin and Jack Knight all jumped on board the premier show, giving up much of their time and working for free / donating fees to related charities. Whilst slow at first, with trust taking time to build – Albrecht and Robinson began to build up a following, and the iconic brand has since grown to become synomous with integrity, laughter, healing, support and community.
Since, many other Australian comedians have jumped on board, as well as other veterans, family members, organisations and ex-Special Forces members within the podcasts.
Kara Robinson and Michael Albrecht dedicate Shellshocked to those who have lost, those grieving, and those suffering in the aftermath of service.
